How did you find out you needed dentures?
My original incident was when I was about 18; I knocked out two of my teeth, damaged three, and at that time I had a fancy bridge put in, but that lasted about 20 years. Then I was driving to work one day and the whole affair fell out so I didn’t have much choice but to go and see the dentist and say, “Can you put it back in?”, but he said “No, can’t do that”.
How seriously did you consider alternatives?
The agreed best, most comfortable option was to go for the implants. I’d been very keen to get implants done and I was looking at it very seriously. I’d done quite a lot of research, but as I don’t have funds to do it – and also I had not had the experience of wearing dentures before, I’ve grown more used to wearing the dentures. I can put up with it.
How did you feel about your teeth loss?
I suppose, mostly what worried me was the pain of the dental work and things like that, you know it’s not great to spend twelve hours in a dentist chair over a period of three or four weeks or so.
What were your perceptions of people wearing dentures?
I’d always imagined dentures were more of a thing to replace a larger portion of your teeth and that would happen perhaps when you were older – the old glass at the side of the table and all of that. You’re obviously aware of people who have sports injuries and rugby players tend to be missing a few.
