Having dentures can be quite traumatic and painful.

Fitting Dentures

Jane, 48 from Watford, found the whole process somewhat degrading

‘Afterwards I didn’t really feel any emotion; I think I just blocked it out.’

For Jacky, 53 from London, the fittings part seemed to take forever

‘The fittings part seemed to take forever, picking out the colour and what have you, the whole process takes time. I got all the advice I felt I needed though and in the end I was simply glad it was all done.’

Taking the impression left an unpleasant impression on Betty, 67 from Ashford

‘It tasted terrible and the feeling that the dentist is going to pull all your teeth out when he removes the mould, is not one I enjoyed. They were only replacing my front two teeth. It was really just a case of going home and getting used to it.’

The fitting can be painful, as Donald, who is 71 and from London experienced

‘After the fitting my gums were very sore and this took several weeks to pass and the metal clips gave me discomfort as they pushed on my remaining teeth. I did ask a number of questions things like; whether I could leave them in at night? Was it okay to keep them in when swimming? As I remember they were helpful and answered everything I asked. I was tired but mostly relieved it was all over.’

Maurice, 70 from London found it all a bit strange and a little painful

‘Obviously they felt strange to start with and a little painful. Mine were fitted immediately after my last permanent teeth were taken out but after a day or two, they settled down. I was told how to look after them, what to expect and that if I found them uncomfortable or in any way ill-fitting that I should return. I did feel a little sad but had to accept the fact that I now had dentures’
