When people first get their dentures, one of the concerns they have is whether they will be able to eat normally or as they did before dentures.

Adapting to Dentures

It was only a few days for Jane, 48 from Watford for things to feel normal again

‘Surprisingly, after just a week or so I got used to them, I was eating and speaking normally. And the Poligrip I bought having seen the TV advert helped a lot.

Maurice, who is 76 and from London agrees

‘Surprisingly, eating wasn’t too much of a problem. My dentist was the one who recommended Poligrip so naturally I took their advice. And they weren’t wrong, so I still use it today. As I said before, wearing dentures is not the horror you think it’s going to be.’

Some people chose to change their eating habits at first, like Beryl, 67 from Rotherham

‘They weren’t particularly uncomfortable, no different to having one tooth extracted actually but I did tend to eat just soft foods and fish for a while.’

However, some people did struggle, like Donald who is 71 and lives in London

‘When I first got them I kept taking them out, as my gums were quite sore. Eating was a problem at this point, especially if I wanted a steak or something like that. It was a struggle and I did keep worrying about them dropping, so I tended to keep pretty tight lipped.’

And for Carol, 71 from Watford, it was eating out that caused some concern

‘Eating was an issue; in fact I wouldn’t eat out at all in case they let me down. At that point the only option was to take them out to eat which was too embarrassing to contemplate.’
