If it's at a normal dentist surgery then perhaps they might have the denture ready in the dentist surgery, and the dentist might fit the denture straight after the extraction.
Please explain the process the patient will go through on the day of fitting
If it’s at a normal dentist surgery then perhaps they might have the denture ready in the dentist surgery, and the dentist might fit the denture straight after the extraction. If it’s just a normal denture fitting, they’ll get called in from the waiting room and the denture will be ready to fit and we’ll fit the denture.
It’s usually about a 20 minute appointment to fit dentures – 20 minutes to half an hour; and they come in, they try the dentures in, they have a look in the mirror and they can see if they like them, if they need a bit of an adjustment, or if it’s digging in at all we can do it there and then.
How will the patient feel in the immediate days after the fitting?
Quite often with dentures when you fit them, it might dig into the gums slightly and it might be slightly sore. All dentures need a slight adjustment, and we can just adjust the edges and re-polish them just to make sure they are absolutely smooth and there is no discomfort. It does take a little bit of getting used to having a new set of dentures and certainly your speech needs to – you need to be accustomised to your new dentures, and your speech sometimes takes a few days to catch up with that.
When and under what circumstances should a patient go back to the dentist?
If there are any problems at all come back to the surgery, go and see your dentist and they’ll be able to help you out with it. It might be that the teeth need a slight adjustment, you might have a slight rough area, when you bite together you might find one of the teeth meets before the other side, in which case go and see your dentist and they’ll be able to sort it out.
Will I be able to eat normally after the fitting?
Usually people will be able to eat normally straight after the fitting, although you might take a few weeks to build up to a full variety of food stuffs. Don’t stick to a soup diet, just try a variety of foods, but obviously don’t go for the T-Bone steak the next day, do go for the chicken. And if you have a choice between roast potatoes or boiled potatoes, go for the boiled potatoes.
